Monday February 20, 2012 @ Vox Populi Gallery
Vox Populi Gallery,  319 N. 11th St., 3rd Floor, Philadelphia, PA, $7-10, 8:00pm. (map)

Michael Haleta (NJ)
Matt Wellins + Sarah Halpern (Pbgh)
Keroaän (Ian M. Fraser and Reed Evan Rosenberg - PHL)

We are incredibly delighted to present this evening of audio-visual performances, including the highly-anticipated Philadelphia debut of local computer-music duo Keroaän.  Building on the pioneering synthesis work of late composer Iannis Xenakis, they have created an artificial-intelligence system that makes blistering, heavy computer music, performed live with a synchronized light show.  Check out the video below for a taste of what to expect.  (WARNING: Probably not recommended for those prone to seizures).  We also welcome Michael Haleta, an electronicist best known for his tenure in the late, lamented Baltimore experimental-noise-rock combo WZT Hearts and his still-going trio Voltage Spooks, with Rick Reed and Keith Rowe.  Tonight, he'll present a rare solo concert on a variety of electronics.  Finally, electronic music archivist Matt Wellins performs on his own homemade electronics (check out the video!) with live projections presented by Sarah Halpern.  This should be a fascinating and occasionally overwhelming night.  We're excited.

Bios:
Michael Haleta (xWZT Hearts) is an intermedia artist exploring, documenting and constructing various forms of optical and aural phenomena. A classically trained cellist turn electronic composer, he is interested in individual sounds and bits rather than complete things. In addition to his solo work, he is one half with his wife, Dawn Bendick, of the audio/visual duo, Backbreakerneckbrace and one third with friends Rick Reed and Keith Rowe, of the electro acoustic trio, the Voltage Spooks. Michael currently lives and works in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey.

Matt Wellins designs and builds analog electronic musical instruments for live performance, in addition to his efforts in documenting the history of its techniques.  This archival project is available at: http://www.ubu.com/emr/index.html  You can hear an improvisation at: http://vimeo.com/15017923

Sarah Halpern makes films for live performance. She is a member of the Optipus Film Club and plays in a band named Louise.  Film performance with Matt Wellins: http://vimeo.com/20636191Film performance with Racheal Guma: http://vimeo.com/31401579

KEROAÄN is a musical artificial intelligence developed by FRASER/ROSENBERG that performs by implementing XENAKIS'S Dynamic Stochastic Synthesis. This non-standard synthesis is played in real time by the KEROAÄN program. Pushing and pulling between sections of hard noise, singing glissandos, jagged melodic scribble and other sonic curiosities, the program liberates the computer from its position as a mere tool of hyper-productivity and transports the machine into a state of creative and performative being. Operatic in scope, a live diffusion of KEROAÄN features lasers, strobe lighting, and fog synched to both audible and structural qualities of the music as an infinitely morphing chorus of digital voices croon, cry, scream and everything in between.
